Since 1957, several noted artists and friends of the arts have made significant bequests to CAAF and the visual arts community. The Calgary Foundation manages these funds and uses the annual interest generated by the funds to support the visual arts locally in various ways, according to the stated intent of the donors. This legacy has been made possible through the generosity of many Calgarians, including H.B. Hill (1957), Wes Irwin (1978), Douglas Motter (1994), and Jim & Marion Nicoll (1986), all practicing artists.

CAAF offers studio residencies with the aim to support emerging artists to reach their full potential. By providing space and funding, the CAAF Studio Residency enables emerging artists to further explore their creative practice and take advantage of opportunities that CAAF can provide. Artists are also encouraged to share their process and engage with the community during their residencies
